David Nail’s music career started in 2002 with the release of debut single “Memphis”. He has since gone on to become one of the most prominent stars in country music with his total scrobbles on Last.fm well over the half million mark.

The Sound of a Million Dreams is Nail’s second album and follows on from 2009′s I’m About To Come Alive. The album has been scrobbled well over 30,000 times – largely thanks to the success of single “Let It Rain”.

Released in February as the first single from the album it became Nail’s first number one in the US Country chart. The success has been reflected on Last.fm, with the track taking in 30,454 scrobbles from 8,496 listeners.

At #3 with a Hype Score of 810, Iranian-born Tooji is representing Norway at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Competing track “Stay” has been scrobbled by 979 listeners over the past week, and is likely to grow in popularity in the run up to the May contest.

Norway contributes another hyped artist at #2, albeit with a very different sound. Indie-pop trio HighasaKite‘s tracks have been steadily gaining popularity since the release of their debut All That Floats Will Rain on Feb 3rd. Unreleased outside Norway as yet, they’ve gained an impressive Hype Score of 946 nonetheless.

The Nordic theme is broken at #1 however, by Californians Sea Lions. Their album Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sea Lions But Were Afraid To Ask was released back in November, but a Pitchfork review on Valentine’s Day has brought them a whole heap of adoring fans. With a Hype Score of 950, it’s testament to the online magazine’s power.

The graph above displays weekly scrobbles for the past year, with something of a drop-off evident. At the same time singer Martin Gore has been working with co-founder Vince Clarke on new project VCMG, although with only 1,737 listeners so far it doesn’t seem they’ve stolen many plays from Depeche Mode.

DM’s last album, 2009′s Sounds of the Universe, seemed to have a mixed reception, but has still gained 6,613,870 plays from 213,256 listeners. At the top of their charts are two tracks from 1990′s Violator, but “Precious” from 2005′s Playing the Angel is their third most-popular track – suggesting that newer material can still make its way into fans’ hearts.

The graph above shows her weekly scrobbles since the beginning of the year, with the past week showing a rise to 600,000 plays in the past seven days. February 12 saw a peak of 240,000 plays in a single day as the sad news spread, with a drop-off since.

As for the tracks listeners have returned to, these haven’t changed over the past week: still on top is “I Will Always Love You,” albeit with a 256% increase in listeners.

Reaching #31 on Last.fm’s Best of 2011 with album F.A.M.E., the past month hasn’t seen much movement in his weekly scrobbles despite his GRAMMY win for Best R&B Album, ending up at the 100,000 mark. “Turn Up The Music” has contributed 41,134 of those plays in the week since its release, currently residing at #12 on his weekly chart.

With fifth album Fortune due next month – almost a year to the day that F.A.M.E. was released – it seems that Brown’s hard work will likely pay off in listeners. Keep an eye on his charts to find out how new material is received.

In at #3 with an impressive Hype Score of 1,464 – far more than any of last week’s chart toppers – is NYC noisepunk band Pop. 1280. With an album named The Horror that isn’t music for the faint hearted, they’ve nevertheless been listened to over 10,000 times in the past seven days – compared to just 500 a month ago.

Providing a complete contrast at #2 is Swedish 17-year-old Moa Lignell, winner of third place in that country’s ‘Idol 2011′. Her self-penned track “When I Held Ya” has been scrobbled by 2,173 listeners in the past week, contributing to her Hype Score of 1,650.

Ruling the roost at #1 is the shadowy figure of deep house innovator John Talabot, claiming a huge Hype Score of 2,665. His album ƒIN has been lauded with praise from the likes of Pitchfork and XLR8R, and listeners have picked up: since the new year his weekly plays have risen from 800 to over 100,000. We’ll learn next week if he can hold on to that rising trend.

The graph above (click to enlarge) shows a decline in weekly listeners over the past twelve months to around 35,000 per week currently, but the award for Outstanding Contribution to Music may bring in new fans, and bring back former listeners.

Think Tank was their last studio album in 2003, and has seen 4,252,030 plays from 360,384 listeners so far – beating both their first two albums. With 90s as one of their biggest tags however, it doesn’t seem likely that new music will ever reach the defining heights of “Coffee and TV” (489,798 listeners) or “Song 2″ (1,006,687 listeners).

Today Last.fm Trends looks at scrobbles for some of the night’s stars of the stage.

Nicki Minaj caused a fair amount of controversy with a performance many saw as insulting, but her listeners are steady at around 36,000 per week. Whether that may drop is yet to be seen, as her shoutbox sees all opinions aired.

The absence of Whitney Houston left a void in the performances, that Jennifer Hudson sought to fill. Her rendition of “I Will Always Love You” should increase on her total of 438,166 listeners as music fans celebrate Houston’s legacy.

Other solo female performers overcame adversity: Taylor Swift‘s “Mean” hit back at her critics, whilst Adele made a return to the stage following voice problems – both celebrating multiple wins, and a combined scrobble count of over 100 million.

The boys rounded off the whole evening: Dave Grohl celebrated Foo Fighters‘ clutch of wins with an epic jam session to close, joining Paul McCartney on stage alongside Bruce Springsteen for a rendition of The Beatles‘ “The End.” With 1,854,253 scrobbles from 363,431 listeners for that track, it was a fitting curtain call.
