Southern rock oldies Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced that they are in the midst of writing a new album, according to Billboard.

Being one of the first bands to bring rock’n'roll to the masses, Last.fm Trends decides to look back at how their worldwide recognition has been translated into scrobbles.

Formed in Jacksonville, Florida way back in 1964, the band are intent on staying active despite a number of tragic setbacks.

2009 saw the release of twelfth album Gods & Guns but with that the saddening tragic death of two of their members – keyboardist Billy Powel and bass player Ean Evans.

The graph below shows what sort of impact Gods & Guns has had on their weekly scrobble counts:

Before the release the band were lingering at under 20,000 scrobbles a week – however post-release and to this day almost two years later the band are comfortably above the 20,000 a week scrobble count, with an obvious spike showing the rise in scrobbles after the initial late September release.

It is likely we won’t see the new Lynyrd Skynyrd album until 2012, an album which may well take the band that much further in the Last.fm scrobble counts.
