Yesterday fans of The White Stripes were saddened by the official announcement that the garage-blues duo are pulling the plug on an illustrious career.

Last.fm Trends looks back at how Last.fm listeners took to one of the most unique duos to grace music.

A total scrobble count of 74,604,075 make Jack and Meg White one of the most scrobbled artists on Last.fm. Similar artists such as The Black Keys and The Kills hold 26,320,317 and 15,491,353 scrobbles respectively, proving the breadth of The White Stripes’ appeal.

 Goodbye to The White Stripes

It is no surprise to see which is the band’s most popular release out of their six studio albums.

Elephant, released in 2003, has been scrobbled by Last.fm users more than any other release, with 17,694,982 scrobbles counted so far. Uber-hit “Seven Nation Army,” video below, is a song you know if you are a White Stripes fan or not, boasts 5,265,551 scrobbles alone and has gone some way to taking the band’s lo-fi sound to the mainstream.

The band’s third release. White Blood Cells, has proved to be the second favorite amongst listeners, taking in 10,969,679 scrobbles.

With just 3,763,272 scrobbles it is the debut, self-titled album that is the least popular. Ironically this is the album that Jack White favors, being quoted in an interview for Guitar Player in 2003 as saying “I still feel we’ve never topped our first album. It’s the most raw, the most powerful, and the most Detroit-sounding record we’ve made.”

I hope A-ha gets the same kind of treatment when they do their final concert in Oslo.. They’ve been performing MUCH longer than Jack and Meg, although both will be greatly missed.

This is a shame, really. They’ve become one of my favorite bands ever since I heard Seven Nation Army on the radio. Though, I do agree with Jack that Elephant has not been and would be very tough to top. I hope to hear more from Jack that isn’t The Raconteurs.
